La Sartiglia

105 The story told by a “Massaia Manna” is wonderful. When “Su Componidori” at a gallop blesses the crowd for the last time, everything seems to be over. At that instant, apparently melancholic, silence rules inside the Guild seat. A few shadows linger after dusk, some attendants wander with discretion, whispers seem echoing in the empty spaces. Little by little the noise gets louder, soft at first then slightly stronger. This is what happens when guests approach the main reception entrance. The last part of the “Sartiglia” reflects exactly the same characteristics. Those who have competed, played or worked hard come back to their “home”, the same room where in the morning the creation of a deity has taken place. The divinity, who cannot touch the ground yet, has to be undressed by the same “Massaieddas”. It is not just a necessary detail. The person, who has been unique for a day, comes back to the origins. The concealed face appears once again revealing a sparkling joy in his eyes. It is not the end of an ephemeral prestige but the crowning of a dream come true not only marking the history of this celebration but also the city of Oristano’s. The rest of the large crowd clap their hands because this part of the celebration is open to anybody. Everybody is entitled to offer their thanks. Here they come the “zeppole”, a typical Sardinian dessert made during Carnival time, then people start raising glasses. The final banquet will soon begin. The omnipresent Sardinian way of concluding any celebration, more or less just like in any other part of the world. This is another fragment of the sacred and profane saga, another link in the propitiatory ritual chain. It is said that strength and energy go round in circles, mutually linked and connected. Just like in a star.
